LANGUAGE and BIRDS

One day years ago, standing in the middle of Dam Square in Amsterdam I found myself listening to a spectrum of groups of different language speakers as they passed by. This proved a turning point for me as I came to my own amazing conclusion that each language sounded like a different set of birds in a forest, each with their own melody and tones.

Prior to that, I’d studied numerous languages rather unsuccessfully until actually living in the country of the language – apart from developing a great “concept” about them – yet from the point of perspective of the chirping birds my language concepts began to fly and I became more focused on how I could help one set of birds communicate with another.

Leonie’s Grilling Beginning

With a degree in English language and culture, I did my CELTA and attained my Masters in Education – specializing in language teaching.

Basically, I’ve taught English to non-native English teachers, from young kids to qualified PhD students to those already retired from the workforce and to a wide variety professionals who need English to communicate in their daily work lives and I’ve done this in Australia, Asia, Europe and South America in universities, language academies and institutes and through distant education and give private one-on-one and group classes. I have even facilitated the acquisition of languages I don’t speak well – with just enough to get myself out of trouble – through opening the language to the students and guiding them.

My teaching methodology has developed and continually progresses with my own language learning experiences – what works, what has not, what is necessary.

Helping people Acquire language skills

While I have learnt how to facilitate learning in others, people always cross my path looking for ways to help them more easily or more specifically advance their skills, looking for where to go or what to use. Even teachers ask me how it is that my students become happy, resourceful and successful language learners.

So, in realising there are many people out there with similar questions, it is my aim to expand this scope of assistance.

Language learning doesn´t need to feel so difficult!
